I Made A Choice

Hello Everyone!
It's that time of year when we all want to get in shape.
I thought I would share with you my 4 month update.
I am by no means an expert but this has really worked
for me. Please join me for my new stats and a recipe.
On 9-09-09 I made a choice to change my life.
I had visited my doctor and had very high B/P.
Needless to say I was scared.
I left on 2 new medications that day and wanted to change.
Here are my stats as of today.
Total weight loss 38 pounds!
I have dropped 3 sizes and have a few more to go.
I'm ready for a new wardrobe. Yay!
B/P as of this am 99/63 It's very low now.
I will following up with my doctor very soon and may
be taken off the meds. I feel much better.
Very healthy eating is the way to go.
We are also working out with weights constantly.

I made a wise choice then.
Here are my main changes.
My only treat is dark chocolate.
This is key and not as hard as you think.
2. Drink water, hot tea, juices, skim milk or Crystal Light.
NO SODAS or DIET SODAS. I was a diet coke fanatic.
Believe me if I can do it you can too.
3. EAT! Fruits, dark green veggies and lean protein.
4. EXERCISE DAILY or at least 3-4 times a week.
5. Have a positive support system for motivation.
Have your family members help you.
You may not lose everyday but it will come
off if you are consistent. Don't give up!
This was a big one for me and I do not do this now.
Have a cut off time and stick to it.
8. Make it a healthy life change not a diet per say.
This is just the way we will be eating from now on.
I hope this inspires you!

This is normal B/P. It should not be higher than this.
Mine was for about 2 years and I ignored it. Bad idea...:(
Doesn't this healthy food just look good?
It's all delicious! You don't have to be hungry to lose.
Make sure and have time to relax.
Here is an example of my healthy tuna salad lunch.
This is a healthy whole roasted chicken recipe that we make.
We have made this many times. Here are the ingredients.
Chop up the fresh herbs rosemary, thyme and sage.
We paired it with fresh asparagus and sweet potatoes.
The chopped herbs.
Add the chopped garlic to them and mix.
Wash the chicken very well in cold water. Pat dry.
Rub it with olive oil and the herbs.
Sprinkle with sea salt and ground pepper.
Cut the lemon in half and stuff in the cavity.
Add the herb stems too.
Place chicken in a roasting dish.
Cook for a 1 1/2 hours at 475. Oven times may vary.
We have a steamer from Black & Decker for our veggies.
This appliance is really great.
I use butter and cinnamon on mine. Yum!
The chicken is ready if the temp is 180 degrees.
This is the tastiest chicken ever.

Melissa !! WAY.TO.GO., GIRL !! You should be very proud of yourself !! Your weight loss is inspiring, and I can only imagine how much better you feel. Obviously, the key is not looking at it as a *diet* (that's where I think people fail ... just saying that word). You decided on a change of life ... much different. I gave up sodas years ago ... am a hot tea fanatic and, thankfully, love to exercise. (Now, if I could only cure my love of Mich Ultra - LOL). And, how wonderful that your husband is your biggest motivator and biggest fan. Congrats, Becca

Melissa, that is so wonderful...I've lost about 78lbs.
just eating up the junk up bread products...gone from a size 18 to a 6....keep up the good work....glad your blood pressure is down...but you better get it ckd that's too far down...

Congratulations on your decision!! I need to do the same - coke/soda has been my downfall. I've picked up a few pounds between Thanksgiving and Christmas and I'm feeling uncomfortable about it.

WTG Melissa, you are doing wonderful...Giving up Sugar would be so hard for me :) but I am trying to cut back...No Dr.Peppers in awhile...Eating at night hasnt ever been my problem...just picking at junk is what gets me...I have made up my mind last night to make myself get on my stationary bike for 30mins ea. evening...Thanks for posting this hopefully it will help me stay motivated....Peggy

First of all, Woo Hoo, indeed! You go, Melissa! You did make a choice and you stuck to it ~ very proud of you, my friend! Once you do all these things for awhile, it does become a lifestyle. I started drinking water and mainly water at least 10 years ago, and I still drink it today as my main source of liquids. Sometimes, I have juice, sometimes when we go out I'll have lemonade or iced tea, but at home or work it's water. I never was a soda drinker except for every once in awhile I'd have a Dr. Pepper. But you'd be amazed at what small changes can do.

My husband and I have renewed our commitment to exercise lately. Both of us had forgotten how good it feels to be active! It's amazing how much more energy we have. It makes us know we're living our lives, not just cruising through on autopilot!

Now girl I have very low BP and always have I just tell the doctors when their trying to get a reading on mine that I also don't have an image in a mirror ha ha!!

That is so wonderful for you! I too, am on a healthy way of life change! I started my change just about 2 1/2 months ago. I have changed my eating habits and am now focused on getting on a good exercise regime! One thing at a time, right! But I am glad to say that so far I am down a little over 16 lbs! Well, I am so happy for you, Melissa! My problem with not eating at night is that I have had bad acid reflux problems for twenty years. I take meds for it. But if my stomach gets empty, it comes back. Hence, I have to eat something at night. But I guess it should be fruit, huh? I eat to keep the reflux down and to keep going.

This sounds wonderful....congrats on losing the weight. I know you are so thrilled. And, to get your bp down is amazing.

Hubby and I just went on the South Beach Diet which is really just about eating healthy. For the first 2 weeks, no "whites" of any kind; grains, flour, sugar, fruits, ...we can eat lean lean meats, mostly chicken, veggies (we love them 2 weeks, we can add whole wheat flour and THEN I can get back to my pancakes and biscuits...sugar free syrup and jelly, OF COURSE...:O)
It is hard to eat healthy for any length of time but, as you say, once we get used to it, it is tons easier. Splenda and I are now BEST FRIENDS...I am such a sugar freak...
If we get hungry at night, we eat celery, carrots, etc.
I LOVE hot teas so I'm good there.

And we generally eat sweet potatoes the same way, a bit of butter and lots of cinnamon. You really are inspiring me to get off the old duff and get moving. This is awesome Melissa ~ congrats to you on everything. I joined Weight Watchers again last night as I know I have to do something. Good news though ~ I have only gained 4 pounds since I was there 3 years ago so I did keep some of my good habits and of course picked some bad habits back up. Wonderful plan!! I too did this and it worked. Then my life changed drastically and I lost weight because of it and then my life leveled out and I have to do it again. I am on the loosing swing again but still not whole into it. I need to fix a few other things first. You are such an inspiration and I am so glad you are so enthusiastic about it!

I'm so, so proud of you!! Maintaining a healthy weight takes consistency.

I was an overweight teen and have stayed thinish for decades by eating healthy and exercising. I've been a gym rat for 30 years and wear a size 4. Now, my 52 year old body looks pretty wrinkly naked, but in clothes, I'm ok :) I workout 6-8 hours a week and cross train with swimming, weights, spin, step, and strength and conditioning. Cross training is key to avoid injuries.

Keep up the good work! Again, I'm very, very proud of you. The very first hurdles are the hardest then it all becomes habit.

Great news on your weight loss, I really enjoyed your update, it's really inspiring. I don't have much weight to lose but I just want to have a lifestyle change and continue to eat healthy too :)
I love your steamer, might have to think about one of those.
Can I ask why you don't drink diet soda but you drink Crystal light? isn't that artificial sugar too? or were you cutting the diet soda out for other reasons? I enjoy drinking club soda with lemon juice and am trying to stay away from diet drinks. I don't like diet cola much but I just bought diet orange soda!!! Bad, I know, but it's rare that I do.
Glad you're enjoying the chicken, it looks so good. Can you believe I haven't done it since I posted about it... you've inspired me again to do that.

I cut out fast food and processed sugars and increased my exercise by walking stairs, etc. and have done very well, also. This was definitely an inspiring post, except for the raw chicken. Raw meat really gets to me! LOL

Thank you so much for posting this! Honestly, I know this intellectually but your sharing and the pictures are a wonderful visual reminder...I so appreciate it. Sugar and carbs are the most difficult for me and probably the most unhealthy items. I do not eat fried foods so why can't I eliminate these other items? :-) I can!! I can establish a cut off time for the evenings too. Any other suggestions, recipes would be most appreciated!

I WAS MENTIONED IN YOUR POST!!!!! That is a first for me and HOW EXCITING! I have changed my whole way of thinking about food. It is a new Life Style. I also do NO SUGAR, LOTS OF WATER, FRUITS, VEGIES, WHOLE GRAINS and PROTEINS. I walk 3-4 times a week and do weights. Once you get into the Skinny Clothes, as I call them... you will stick to it. When I was losing I got on the scale once a week. I called it my weigh in day. Now to maintain... I am on every other day. This way I know when to have a lighter day of eating. I feel great! My Blood Pressure is low and my cholestrol has gone way down! THANK YOU TO YOU MELISSA FOR BEING MY INSPIRATION! You will love all the NEW SHOPPING and COMPLIMENTS! Feeling Great... Nancy from OHIO

I think the hardest thing for me is to get into an exercise routine...that is tough if you have no one to do it with...but NO excuse!!

So happy for you on your weight loss and getting your BP under control!!! I have been doing Weight Watchers for over a year now and have lost 20 pounds and have kept it off. I had oral surgery this past Monday and have not been able to eat much and am hoping when I go and weigh in on Monday the scales will show a loss!!! LOL! I love healthy eating I just do not discipline myself enough. I did not eat fast food for eight months and could tell a difference. I slowly went back to it and now am winging myself away from it and have been cooking at home. I have a steamer but mine is not double contained like yours. I will have to check it out. Good luck with your progress. Love your blog and BTW from looking at your profile pic you did not look like you needed to lose weight but hey we all want to lose right? LOL!!!

Melissa I am so very proud of you and you have given me a much needed kick in the pants to get back to health. I don't need to loose weight but sugar and carbs really make the fibromylgia kick in for me. I have been so drained and I know much of it is because of my eating habits lately. I have to get totally off as I cannot seem to disipline myself with just a tad of sugar-

You've lost a considerable amount in a fairly short time so the meds are no doubt off for you! Please do that soon! Your roasted chicken looks so good. I have made it this way for years. My only concern is the baking dish you are using is drowning your chicken in it's own fat as it cooks. I actually place cooling racks on my huge foil lined sheet pan and place my chickens on them. That way all the fat is staying in the bottom of the pan, never touching my chickens.

Keep up the good work and keep inspiring us. I should have been wise and done this a long, long time ago but I am doing it now.

BTW, I have a set just like the one you have, the striped oval dishes (3 sizes) that came in with iron and wicker stands. Can I use them in the oven?...Christine

Hello my Sweet girl...Thanks for coming by honey its like having cooffee with my own daughter...oh I forgot I have to serve you tea now ha ha!! how are you doing my friend...we have been in a big rain strome here and the winds are just a blowing so hard...but so far I have losted power knock on wood...but that doesn't mean it won't happen if you don't see me around you know why so don't be dragging the river ha ha!!

That steamer looks like it really comes in handy. This is great advice, you're really inspiring everyone to make a change! That chicken is something I'll have to try. I made a small roaster this week but didn't season it like that, I'll give it a try.

Congratulations! Struggling with three inter-linked auto-immune diseases I have found so much information on the link between sugar/flour/preservatives and not only obesity but things like fibromylgia and chronic fatigue. I eat almost totally gluten-sugar free and as organic as possible. I never loose weight but my husband continues to drop pounds.

Wonderful post and inspiration!

And your food looks amazing. I do the chicken with lemon things all the time!

Many congratulations Melissa, not only must you look fabulous but you are so much more healthy now. It is funny because, my neighbour got me going to curves each day with her back in July of 2009 she wanted to lose 100 pounds and I wanted to lose quite a bit too, we both are doing exactly what you have listed right here and I started to walk up the hill after curves and have now lost 25 pounds, my neighbour preferred to use the treadmill and has lost a whooping 65 pounds, her BP is normal, her cholesterol results are amazing and she looks terrific. I also started to go to the park with my hubby (he ran and I rode my bike), since then he has lost 20 pounds, supporting each other is so important as you say. We all feel so much happier. We never put any foods off limits, (except diet soda, we went cold turkey on that and now drink water too) we just chose the good foods 90% of the time and the not so good foods 10%, instead of the other way around. I saw your last post on your weight loss journey and kept meaning to comment but now you have gone on to make an even healthier life for yourself and it's inspiring to see peoples success. Now having said all that, I must warn you not to go to my blog as I have just posted Gollum's son's new blogs "ultimate sandwich", that I tried for lunch today and it IS SO NOT healthy, but once in a while I guess we all deserve a treat. I will be trying your chicken recipe next. Big hugs, Kathy.

Ohhh...Melissa, I am just ecstatic for you, Darlin'!!! WOW!!! 38 lbs and 3 sizes??? That is absolutely fabulous...Congratulations!!! Yeeehawwww...I see shopping for an entire new wardrobe in your future, sweet girl!!! How very exciting!!! And...I'm just so proud of lost this weight the healthy way! No fad diet pills...etc.! I know alot of people lose weight doing these things but I do worry about it being unhealthy and dangerous! I know that when I've lost weight, I always do a low-fat diet...very healthy! I need to get back to doing that again...I hate to say it but fell off the wagon around Thanksgiving! I need to lose so much weight that I become overwhelmed by it...keep me in your prayers please! Well Darlin'...this is just the most exciting and marvelous news ever!!! You truly are an inspiration to all of us who need to do better in making more healthy life choices...thank you, Melissa!!!

I love oven grilled veggies too.
There's a company called Tastefully Simple, that sells the most amazing spice blends I've ever tasted and I'm a hard sell. I have no affiliation with the company, my neighbor had me try them, cause she knows how much I cook. They've become a staple in my spice cabinet. I use mainly the Simply Salsa, Sundried Tomato Garlic Pesto and their Seasoned Salt, they're all natural ingredients. I use them on all meats and veggies. Let me know if you'd like to try them, I'd 'be more than happy to send you some.

That is basically what I did to lose weight as well.

I cut out white flour (and preprocessed foods).

I need to look up refined sugars to see exactly what foods that would include. I guess anything that isn't natural sugar (like fruit), right?

Okay, I'm inspired once more :) I am an average 5'6" and normally weighed around 135. Until I hit 40 and the pounds began to slowly add up. I've always been on the slim side so I actually didn't take it that seriously! Big mistake! With no exercise routine, other than teaching second graders, and snacking more once our daughters moved out of the house I found myself at 203 pounds by the age of 57. Looked huge and felt horrid.

I began using the eating suggested in Metabolism Miracle and began parking further from stores, etc. This was in January. By April I'd lost 35 pounds and felt great! Sadly, during the summer and lots of guests visiting us, eating out took its toll. Then the fall and winter holidays. Ugh.

I'm still holding around 168, but want to be 145-150 once more. Reading your blog has inspired me. I've cut out sodas enough times to know that it can be done. Hard! But it can be done. At our ages, John and I both need to be back on a healthier eating habit and exercising more.

So thankful you're an honest and sharing person, Melissa. Blessings!
