Clean It Up!

Hello Everyone!
On a previous Q & A post I had many of you
ask me about how I keep our home so clean.
I thought I would take the time to share my tips.
First I will tell that I do not have a maid and that
I am a clean fanatic! My sister is reading this and
laughing very hard at that statement. Ha! ;)
I have been this way as long as I can remember.
I was always the neatest of the three of us girls.
1. The key to a clean home to me is "clutter free".
Do you watch the tv show "Hoarders"?
Well I can tell you that I am the exact opposite.
I am always recycling and cleaning out closets
and drawers. We donate to Goodwill constantly.
In fact sometimes it backfires on me and I'm looking
for it later. Oops! This is the best way to get organized.
Ask yourself do I really need this and then let it go.
2. Set up a cleaning schedule.
For me this means daily, weekly and monthly tasks.
Daily/ make beds, hand held swiffer, laundry, vacuum
Weekly/ change sheets, use lemon pledge, clean toilets
Monthly/ tubs, showers, apple cider vinegar the floors
Yearly/ pressure wash exterior, hose down inside garage
steam clean carpets, touch up paint exterior
I am consistent with this and it really works for me.
~Ah! It doesn't take that much time at all.
A clean and clutter free home feels so right.
I try to use natural products for cleaning such as
baking soda and apple cider vinegar. Mix the vinegar
with warm water and use it on your hardwoods and
tile. It works great! Baking soda is wonderful too.
A good book full of many household tips is
Martha Stewart's "Homekeeping Handbook".
I suffer from allegies big time! I really have no choice
but to have a super clean home. I must breath easy.
Here is one of my all time favorite cleaning products.
Do you have pets or spills?
It's the Spot Bot made by Bissell. We bought ours here.
I never get paid by anyone for advertising.
I just like to share what works for me.
Add some of this and tap water.
I have had this before but recently bought a new
one with the extra "heat" feature. It is amazing!
*Warning* cat vomit pictured below.
Don't look if you are sqeamish.
If you have a cat then you what I mean about hairballs.
Oh they are super gross. The change of seasons just causes
shedding and brings out the worst in our sweet kitties.
Poor Chestnut tried to hide it. He is so smart.
Really. Don't laugh.
Turn on the water heater.
I used the wand feature but you can also place it
directly over the spot and let it work for you.
A few minutes later and it's clean!
Bliss. This little machine is a lifesaver.

What are your cleaning and organizing tips?
I would enjoy hearing them. Please share.
Have a great week!

Melissa you are just so darn normal! LOL

Seriously I love that you just shared that Chester gets sick like all other animals and that you have to clean it. Some bloggers like to pretend life is all rosy and the house is cleaned by magical fairies. LOL

I'm just going to have to go rent a home so I can decorate and use your skills.

I was SO excited today though, I bought a set of Corelle plates/bowls and cups today at WalMart for 18 bucks! (I am building a little stash of household appliances and such before I move out one day). I made sure to just get white ones so when I do buy a set that I LOVE they will match. : D I just had to share because it made me think of you for some reason. lol

My house is like your house! LOL People have seen pictures and said Who is coming over? No one! its always neat and clean! I am like you I keep on top of things. Everything has a place. When I get the mail I throw out the junk mail even before I get in the house in the recycling bin. I look at the mail and then put in a basket in the office. I came from a very organized/clean freak house, did you? I make the beds right away and don't have laundry piled up. I do laundry every other day. I don't like to dust though! Sometimes I find dust bunnies around!

I have always been a schedule cleaner....I used to work 10 hour days and I HAD to stay on a schedule or I was cleaning and catching up all weekend. I liked my weekends too much to be cleaning!! We have a dog, so I totally know about accidents...I should get rid of more stuff though. But then like you, I am looking for it!

Cathy said...

I am just like you Melissa! It is a little harder when the kids are younger and every room in the house is being invaded by little hands and feet but I still had to have everything as perfect as possible!

I stay on a pretty tight schedule...but I am not a "green cleaner"...I am a bleach freak...scary I know! I would love to have a housekeeper but they never do it MY way...so I can't seem to keep one:(!

I wish I could be a little less of a fanatic...but at 50 it might be a little to late to change;)!

Great post!

Enjoy!
Cathy

I wish I was organized like you. I have tried to be, but it just isn't me, I guess.
I haven't seen the spot bot before, pretty neat machine, it looks like. I bought a full size carpet shampooer last year and while it works good, it wears me out trying to shampoo carpets.
Your home is beautiful...thanks for the tips.

Good Evening Melissa~

I am a clean freak too! I really don't know how peopel live in filth or clutter. I laughed at your comment about throwing stuff out so much that it back fires... I so have chucked things that I could of used mayber later. OH' WELL. I can't stand clutter. I need that amazing machine you have.. how great. Your home is beautiful and you can tell you run a tight ship (as I have been told) and it stays clean. Now if my kids would just stop messing up what I clean... I would really REALLY be happy. Hi!

I am a clean freak too and if my house is not spotless, dustfree, and clutter free --- I freak out and am not in a good mood. I am constantly cleaning!!!! I love a clean home and I like for everything to be organized. I have to tackle my upstairs which has gotten to be cluttered. You cannot see the pool table. But, this is stuff we inherited from my husband's parents and we are still trying to find a place for all the china and silverware and other things, such as odds and ends of furniture, crystal, photo albums, framed pictures, paintings, etc. etc!!! I would never have a full time maid as I am picky about the way I clean!!!! Been a cleaning freak since I was a kid!!!!

I have wondered how you keep your house so clean too! It feels so good to have a clean, organized house. I'm not as good at it as you are!

That Spot Bot looks like something every home should have!

Have a wonderful night!

Hi Melissa! I used to clean my house very much like you do when my kids were young. But I'm olden now and get a bit lazy! But since Mr. Precious has retired, we've been purging and painting rooms. I've been working on closets and have taken so much to Goodwill.
Your home is so beautiful and I did laugh when I saw you showed your kitty up chuck! :)
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

I am like you. I like everything neat and tidy and clutter free. Those hoarder show make me nervous. I just can't understand that. Anyway, I do like you....make the beds every day, never leave dishes in the sink, wipe the countertops etc.

I like everything in order. It is just in my nature. I like that machine that you use for Chestnut. I need that for Bit Bit until he gets better.

Oh gosh, I wish I could be like you Melissa and a little more organized, I do always try to declutter but I just never seem to get on top of it all... I'm still trying though ;-) I was painting Kristen's bedroom at the weekend so I am behind on housework again. I do like that you shared your cleaning schedule with us, I have gotten off track with mine, I used to be much better, but reading blogs like yours always helps to get back on track and feel motivated.
Have a wonderful week my friend.

I allow myself one basket for "treasures" and only one. When I leave my home each morning, the counters are clean, the bed is made, and everything is in its place. Even on a bad day, I can come home with a smile because I have order in my home. I guess it could also be a military thing that has run mad over the years :)

I am so jealous of people like you that are so clean and organized. My home is always cleaned, well... pretty darn clean. Kitchen especially, but I am a clutter bug. I clean it, organize it and it just keeps coming back. Since we have moved to our new home, I am doing soooooo much better. I want it to be easier to clean! I have made at least 10 to 15 trips to Goodwill and no telling how many trips to the dump. I have given away tubs and tubs of clothes to neighbors with little girls. It is a good feeling and I hope to keep it going! Now I just have to get on a cleaning schedule. I really like how you have it broken down and may have to give it a try! Thanks for the great post!

OMG Melissa, I know what you mean!!! You make me laugh, and boy I needed it, sadly due to hairballs! Oh well, we get stuck cleaning it! It never fails for me, what ever is freshly clean, and I am so very tired, guess what happens at 3 A.M.? You know!!! Well, guess it's part of the kitty package!! Bravo to you for being so honest, stuff happens!! Love to you and the little stinker too! Lori Speaking of it, watch her do it tonite! Bet she does it more then Chestnut, she's so nervous!

Hi Melissa,

I can't stand clutter around the house, so I'm constantly organizing.
I couldn't part with alot of my decorating magazines... so I built crates to store them in.
I also keep a file cabinet for storing important papers, it makes it a snap to find them later.

I also have allergies too and am very sensitive to harsh chemicals. I like "Simple Green" products alot! But yes I think every household should have apple cider vinegar, it's great for so many things, not just cleaning, it's great for your health too!
I use Bragg's organic. You might want to check out their website! www.bragg.com

Here's to your health and spring cleaning!!

Again, you and I are just alike.....I never go to bed at night without things picked up, clean on just about the schedule you do....spray out the tub every night so I never have to scrub, mop the kitchen floor at least every other day....but I never consider it work, it just happens....My kids have always laughed that they use the same towel over and over because I have it washed and folded and back on top before they take another shower....I NEVER let the laundry pile up....The grandkids can put their pajamas on and an hour later I have their clothes washed, dried and folded...
I will admit the one job I hate is unloading the dishwasher, so many of our dishes get washed over and over...Some people make it too hard.

Ha! I thought you were going to tell us that you were a messy growing up. I have a teenage daughter that is driving me crazy with her messies.... She tells me that my standards are too high! I think not, I should show her photos of your home and she might change her mind about me. Boy could I have used that Spot Bot at my last home. Our cat throws up too, and we decided to do mostly hardwoods this time around. Have you tried the Furminator deshedding tool? It helps so much, and if Chester loves to be brushed he will really enjoy it. Okay, I should go and pick up the trail of toys my LO left before bed.....Blessings to you!

I adore this post! My basement desperately needs a major revamp and every time I think of it the show Hoarders pops into my mind. Keeping it real is one (of several) charming traits I love about your blog. I can relate about Chestnut and understand exactly where you are coming from. I’ve shared my home with several furry friends over the years.
Also I met an adorable new blogger named Shanna. If you have time please drop by for a visit and say hi. I think you will like her. http://revampedfrenchmaison.blogspot.com/

Great tips, thanks again!

Thanks again for motivating me. Hugs, Becca

Loved all the tips. Your the second person in two days that has mentioned baking soda.

I have watched hoarders..I keep saying I'm just a neat hoarder..lol. Like you though I do bring items to Good will at least each month, if not twice a month. Told you I was a hoarder. I have two HUGE garbage bags staring at me right now on the wicker settee that need to be brought to the Good will...I LOVE decluttering. The goal is to simplify my life and my surroundings. Keep things I love, NOT like.

I think I need to get one of those to clean up cat puke! My cat looks just like yours and he is throwing up hairballs, too. When you get through cleaning your house you can come do mine. Just kidding. I keep mine pretty clean, too. I vacuum every day. My hubby calls me the vacuum queeen!

I don't have the little Bissel but I do have the big one and use it all the time! I love your cleaning schedule. It makes everything manageable. Thanks for sharing your great tips!

Robin said...

Keeping the clutter away is key. I've tried teaching my kids at a young age to have a 'place for everything'. I have the upright Bissel pro-heat and love it. We don't wear shoes inside which helps keep dirt from tracking everywhere. We do a deep top-to-bottom cleaning of the house 1x per week and the kids all pitch in (we have a chore slip method). During the week, we keep everything picked up and decluttered so it looks presentable if unexpected guests show up. One of my favorite time savers for cleaning is Murphy's Soap. A capful in a sink of hot water and we can dust any type of surface, using microfiber towels. This works great at grabbing dust and we don't waste a ton of paper towels.

Valerie @ itsonly100pounds said...

Hi Melissa, Thanks for following my blog and letting me know that I could follow as many as I want. I have been saving them in my favorites but I've been signing up to follow lots of them now.

Right now my favorite cleaning tool is the swiffer vacuum. We have two dogs and a cat and it works great for keeping the hair off the laminate floors.

I never clean on a schedule!! Just not me. Although I wish it were me. I was just looking at my kitchen thinking it's time to clean the cabinets etc. That's how I work. When I see it I do it LOL!

Although, I hate clutter and like you give a lot to Goodwill. That hoarders show is scary! Those poor people!

I've been spending so much time outside that I've really neglected the inside. But I'm waiting for a rainy day to work inside.

I like your steam cleaner! I have a large Bissel rug cleaner but it doesn't have that detachable head thing that yours does. Can you clean upholstery with it? That would be so handy.

I really enjoyed this post! It's always fun to see how people do things!

Melissa, that is a great hint re: using apple cider vinegar on hardwoods. I haven't had this type flooring in the past...now I do & have been wondering what to use. I tried Murphy's Oil Soap the other day and it was good.

Normally, I use all natural products too as I have allergies plus I try to avoid chemicals when I can. I am sold on Shaklee's Basic H2. It is highly concentrated and one uses a very tiny amount with water. It can be used for everything in the house and is highly recommended by Drs.

I am not a "schedule" cleaner per se. My mother drove me wild growing up ~ our house was always "sterile" and I could not have friends over. No fun at all! I love for everything to be organized and clean...just not one to schedule it. Guess it's too much of an unpleasant reminder for me.

Thank you for sharing! Hope you're having a wonderful week ~

Brightest blessings,
Pat

P.S. The Spot Bot looks like a great tool to have!

Hello Melissa~ I can appreciate your allergy concerns, I've got allergies too...although for some strange reason I'm not allergic to cats, thank heavens!! Could you imagine? I shutter at the thought, lol.
I have to confess...most of my cleaning is done by my housekeeper (who I adore and appreciate immensely) but, I do maintain the top layers and A-L-L my kitties...hmmm...ummmm...accidents and there are MANY from my sweet (arthritic, partly senile) 16 year old kitty. I laughed so hard when I read your 'WARNING!!"
Amgels accidents are very similar to the surprises that Chester shares with you (they're generous that way).
I like the Meyer (organic) cleaning products for most of my cleaning detail.
Ever since we've replaced 95% of our carpeting, it has really helped my asthma. I use to have Hepa Filter air purifiers on 24/7 all over the house.

I've got a question...do you do on line decorating consultations?

Sweet wishes,
Sara

Great post, Melissa ! I never hear of allergies when I was growing up and now, who isn't allergic to something. I like that Spot Bot, I think it is. One problem is the heavyness of the cleaners. I am fairly strong, but It's hard for me to pull and push sometimes. When I get motivated, I go all day instead of Moderation. I am going to look for these products.
You can be our resident Heloise, how about that. You have so many handy hints!
BTW. I think I am up and running. I say this holding my breath. Some sweet soul put 3 pages that I lost back on this one. I thought that was just the nicest gesture. Now who do I thank for that ?

I'm tellin' ya...it was pure torture when I had to share a room with my sister who was a couple years younger than me! What a great post...I appreciate your cleaning tips and sharing with us some of the products that you use! I have started my spring cleaning already...but I have had to change the way I do it these days because of my energy level. What seems to work for me, I do my daily cleaning and add one thing that needs deep cleaned! Yesterday I cleaned out window sills! Hehe!

I also wanted to tell you that I visited your last post! Melissa, I love, love, LOVE that red tray!!! It's gorgeous! You always find the prettiest things, my friend...and they are always my style! Oh, my sweet friend, I am exhausted just looking at your schedule! lolol And envious....oh how I wish I could discipline myself enough to be on a schedule like that, but the reality is schedules are just not me. Try as I might it never quite works out for me. :-) Soooo...I clean when something needs to be cleaned. I think keeping to a schedule is hard for me because of working, too. Though I am fortunate to onluy work four days a week, I rarely get home as early as I would like. I just don't feel like cleaning then. Luckily, though, even though hubby works full time+ he is AWESOME about doing stuff around the house! I don't even have to ask, he just does it. I'm glad you wrote this post, Melissa! Your house DOES always appear so very clean, and I love that.

I think you're right that the key to a clean home is to get rid of the clutter. But there are so many areas of my house that I need to de-clutter! Sometimes it can feel daunting. I know I just need to do a little bit every day and keep at it until it's all done. . . but it's so easy to get distracted with things that are more fun. You've inspired me to get back to getting things shiny and clean!

Hi Melissa, I just realized you posted this on Monday! I can't believe I missed it...Your cleaning tips are great! I have noticed your home is always so clean! I try to keep things clean on the surface, but I am really bad about my closets, craft room, drawers, and laundry. Those are things that are really hard for me to keep up with. I usually go through my closets and donate to a place called Abilities Unlimited, they will come and pick everything up. That is on my list of things to do next week! My parents just bought a steam cleaner for both of us to use. I really like it...it makes everything feel so much cleaner. I am still overwhelmed by all the cleaning and organizing I need to do though. It seems like I am contantly picking up clumps of rolling dog and cat hair! lol...I think they are shedding their winter coats. Great post!! Thanks for your sweet compliments on my tablescape!! I will post the garden later tonight. Kristen

I ♥ this! Funny about the Bissel. I have a Bissel Green Machine, have bought 5 over the last 10 years or so, & I could NOT (& will not) live without one! My carpet has got to be spot free, & it is. With four little wee ones running amock, at that! Bissel's Green Machine doesn't 'heat' like yours so when this one poops out, I'll have to check into the model you use!

I used to clean 'green', but don't any longer because Staph ran rampant in our home! It was the worst experience of our life! So now I only use cleaners (gag, cough, gasp for air) that disinfect. Green cleaners clean, but don't disinfect/kill germs & bacteria. Kudos to you for making it work!

Thanks for sharing your tips! :)

Melissa, I just now read this post. I've been keeping house now for 25 years, and have been dying to make out a schedule. Girl, I am coming back and jotting yours down. IT WILL WORK for ME! I never seem to stay on top of it all and then I try to do a major clean every two weeks and it kills me. Age is creeping up! :)
Thanks for sharing.
