Goals & Plateaus

Hello Everyone!
It has been eight months now.
Many of you have asked about my healthy eating
and weight loss update so I thought I would share.
Total pounds lost-47 B/P -94/63
I am happy overall but I did miss my final goal.
I have only lost 2 more pounds since March when I
reached my 6 month mark. Click here to read my last update.
It's been frustrating to be really close and not hit the target.
Let me explain.
I have not changed my super healthy eating plan
or exercising. What happened is I have hit a plateau.

My food intake is the same since I lost 45 pounds at
the 6 month mark and then I did not adjust my calories
to a lower amount so I'm weighing about the same.
I'm trying hard but plan to adjust and work harder.
My new goal is to lose 11 more pounds.
I want to drop 2 more sizes.
I'm 5'3" and very petite framed.
I have a date of 09/09/10 to reach this goal.
One year since I started this health journey.

My BMI is now in the healthy range.
I am very pleased with that but would like
to be about right in the middle of 18.5 to 25.

We eat healthy and fresh foods daily.
No refined sugars or sodas.
One mistake I made in the very beginning
was not purchasing a tape measure and finding
out my results this way. Even though I have
only lost 2 more pounds since March it could be
I have lost inches due to all the weight training.
I am also probably gaining overall muscle mass
which weighs more than the fat I am losing.
I will keep on moving forward with my plan.

Another adjustment I will make is increasing my
water intake even more. This will also help with the
water retention problem I have been having.
This has been another reason for the 2 pound only loss.
I am now off of the B/P medications and that is
wonderful but one of the side effects was water loss.
I do not recommend anyone to try losing weight
using water reducing medication. It's dangerous.
Please talk to your doctor first.
I hope I have helped to inspire you if need be.
I am certainly not an expert. I just wanted
to share my experience of what has worked for me.
I plan to post some more healthy recipes soon.
I'm hoping with more hard work my next post on
this subject will be a before and after success story.

Hi Melissa, You did a great job,don't get discouraged . Because of you sharing I have lost 11 pounds. Not much but on the road too.Your posts have inspired countless people I am sure of it. Eleven more pounds! You can do it--but it's hard when you've reached a plateau, isn't it? It's much easier when the pounds are coming off rapidly.

Do remember that muscle weighs much more than fat, so if you've been doing a good bit of weight training and have still lost weight, that's really great!

Your BP numbers are just wonderful. I'm really proud of you for all your hard work and so excited that you are keeping yourself so healthy now! Thanks for sharing your progress with us.

I just got back from the bookstore where I purchased a vegetarian cookbook. I'm seeking ways to feel better and lose weight. I am so very proud of you! I need to go back and reread what you eat. Because I've GOT to eat better!

Outstanding! Please don't be hard on yourself. Muscle mass does weigh more and your body is most likely changing re: inches rather than lbs right now. I think you're doing an incredible job with this and you are an inspiration to all of us! Thanks for posting the BMI chart.

Thats awesome!!! That still is alot of weight to lose! Im trying as well! But I really love food! I did the BMI calculator, Im overweight! Ahhh...but if I lost 1 more pound I would be healthy! hahaha Lets do this!

You have every reason to be very proud of your accomplishments, Melissa. I am sure you will have no problems getting to where you eventually would like to be. It's wonderful that you are able to get off of the BP medication. You are an inspiration!

I'm sorry you are feeling a little discouraged. Keep on doing what you are doing and the muscle mass will burn calories and you will drop the sizes but may not drop the weight amount for the very reasons you gave.
You are to be commended girl and very proud of your self!

I want all excuses out of the way before I start. I really do well when I am ready and can just do it without pressuring myself. I have a few other blog friends that are doing really well to. "BRAVO" you rock girl! I'm really looking forward to your recipes.
Because of you... Every Monday, I chop several veggies into a (big) bowl. I cut enough veggie mix to last through the week. When I get hungry for a little somethin' I have a ready made salad at any time throughout the day and week. For me, when I get hungry I reach for whats easy and accessible which is usually processed junk.
Sometimes I have to make up two batches, when we use this on our fish tacos.
I'll be posting about it soon.

You should be so proud of yourself! I struggle with making good tasting food that's healthy for us so I look forward to more recipes. If the salmon is any indication of what you eat, we are in for a big treat because it was DELICIOUS! Are we going to see a before and after photo?

P.S. I forgot to mention back on your cleaning post. I've found (many years ago) the most amazing stain removal product. It eliminates the offensive orders that can be left behind from pet "accidents." It's called Kids and Pets. You can find it in most grocery stores in the carpet stain removal isle. I use it in my laundry too. it kills those pesky pet urine enzymes.

You have done an awesome job! I still can't get over all the weight you have lost...I know you will reach your goal soon. Every time I read about your weight loss I get so inspired until I get hungry and want to fill myself with a bunch of junk! I really need to cut back on the sugar!! I might have mentioned that my brother is a type 1 diabetic and cannot have hardly any sugar at all. He actually develped it in his 20s which is rare, it is usually developed as a child. They think it could have been brought on by an infection he had in his back. It was very strange! He has to wear an insulin pump and constantly monitor is blood sugar. It is a very dangerous disease especially if you don't take care of yourself. I just hope he does... Anyway, I really think it's awesome that you have accomplished what you have! I know your hubby is a big help too. I'm sure that helps alot! Talk to you soon, Kristen

Melissa, you have done an amazing job and I am so proud of you. I love that you share it all with us too, it helps keep me motivated, especially when you remind me that I should up my intake of water. I am eating really healthy right now and loving it. Trying to walk every day but probably only managing 4 times a week.. but still that is good. That is awesome news too that you have come off your bp meds. Plateaus are hard! I'm so proud of what you've accomplished! You've made such a major change in your eating habits. Giving up refined sugar is huge and not easy! I'm only 5'3" so I know how a few extra pounds look on a petite frame. Keep at it, I now you'll reach your goal!

I found you on another blog (I think Manuela's?) and wanted to say congrats on your weight loss!! Good for you! I am short as well and can totally sympathize how 11lbs is definately two pants sizes!
I am in the middle of trying to lose 20 lbs as well. I have lost 5 so far and hoping I keep on the straight path! I know whatt I have to do, just trying to be disciplined and do it!

Congratulations!!! 47 pounds is nothing to sneeze at...that's for sure! think that you've been able to go off of your BP meds...I'm sooo happy for you, Darlin'! Well...I'm sure that sitting on that ol' plateau is pretty frustrating...but I think your body is just trying to settle and adjust...that's normal! I also believe what you said about building muscle since you've been working out...that muscle does weigh a bit more but overall it's so much better!!! I just weighed myself last night while I was at the gym (which I haven't gone in months, sigh..pinched nerve problem). I lost 2 lbs. in two weeks. My plateau hung on for dear life girl for almost a year. So I was quite joy filled to see this scale move. Plateau has moved and I'm on the roll again.

Your right about the inches...Scale may not move, but inches do. I remember making a video awhile back stating that the scale stated this, but my pant size had gone 4 sizes! So the scale says I didn't lose any weight (actually gained 5 lbs.) but my clothes were 4 SIZES smaller...

REason I don't like the scales too much and don't even have one in my home It broke. Never replaced it.

I'm impressed Melissa.

I've always maintained the same weight for years until I reached 55! Now I have to work harder to stay the same. It's a struggle as I find I crave more sweets. But I will not give in.
