Ideas for Updates

Hello Friends!
It's been a rainy day here in NC and we needed it.
It's starting to look like a jungle out there now.
I'm always have decorating ideas pop up in my head.
Since my hubby is a Marine it is not worth it to
put too much into our home. It is always only a
matter of time before the next moving day comes.
For us it may be next summer or the one after.
We don't know anything at this point.
Join for me for my wish list of home decor' ideas.
We had our home built 4 years ago and had
upgrades put into the kitchen while it was being built.
Anyone who has done this process before knows that
almost nothing comes upgraded in a new home.
We extended the cherry hardwoods, added recess lighting
and hanging pendants, stainless appliances and painted.
We added the granite countertops a few months later.
The kitchen is pretty spacious and I do enjoy that.
What I would do is paint out the cabinets and add trim.
Who knows what color. Maybe a warm brown or rich black.
At this point they will have to stay as is.
Here is the adjoining family room and I would
extend the hardwoods into this room as well.
In the formal dining room I would add white
decorative wainscoting to the bottom and paint.
For added curb appeal I would have a brick paver
sidewalk leading to the front steps. I love that look!
We added the red round pathway from Lowes.
I would also add more custom landscaping.
On the covered back deck I would have this made
into an enclosed room. It would have glass walls
and a ceiling fan. Our neighbors are having it
done now and it looks very nice.
In the master bathroom I would tile the floor.
It comes standard now for the newer homes
being built in our neighborhood. Go figure.
I would also change the countertops to granite.
With all that said I do love our home as is!
I'm very grateful to live here and take care of it.
This is just a fun what if dream of mine. :)
How about you? Do you ever think of more updates?
Mr Chestnut is napping with all of this rainy weather.
He says sweet dreams to you too.
Have a wonderful week!

ALWAYS! But our house has lost so much value, we can't do anything. I love it the way it is, but there is always something out there to make it even more yummy!

Hi Melissa...

Your hardwood floors look really terrific!

I ALWAYS have a list of "what if's" for decorating. Unfortunately, the budget or time kicks in. LOL!!

Love your list!

Melissa, your home is so pretty just like it is, but I do know what you mean about having those other little things done just to make it a little better. I would love to have my bathtub replaced with a claw foot tub and the fiberglass tiny shower we have enlarged and tiled. Hubby says no way. Just dreaming anyway.

Michelle said...

Always a running list. We have been in our home for 8 years and I am always tweeking what I can. Budget is always a concern. BUt small things sometimes add up to a big punch .

Stacey said...

Hey girl! There's always a wish list whether you will be in a home a short time or a long time. My best friend and I were talking about this the other day. She would like to add wood floors...we already did that and I love not having any carpet. We would like to have stainless appliances. There is not a move in our future but we will have two sons in college. I think our budget as we have known it is history! :)

Hi Melissa! I live in that 'what if' dream world a lot! :)
Your home is so beautiful and your touches make it superb. I think it's just natural that we see our homes and think of other ways we would love for it to look! We're women after all! :)
Be a sweetie,
shelia ;)

Your home is very beautiful and it's look so inviting! You have excellent taste. I am also a dreamer. I could spend hours designing in my head.

I had my dream home for 10 years but we had to sell it a few months ago and I was heartbroken. I thought I'd live there forever. But I guess these really aren't our forever homes. We just on our way to our 'real homes', right?

Hugs,
Debbie

Love your home, Melissa! Too bad you already know that you'll be moving in the next couple of years {not by choice}. I know we will be selling our house in the next two years to down-size and I've been restraining myself from doing anything too involved. I have things in my mind that I would like in the next house, but I would rather it already be in place than have to do it. I've been there, done that already!

I'd love built-ins; I'd love an extra room {even in a basement} to set up my home office/craft area. For now, I save pictures in my decorating ideas folder on my computer.

You have a very lovely home and you have decorated it so nicely.
I am pretty happy this time around...after a few times, you finally get it the way you want it! :D

Love the kitchen...so pretty!! If you love your home, you're always doing something to it!!

Melissa said...

Oooh....good topic! I would do some of the same things you discussed....the granite counter tops, the white painted wainscoting, etc. I would also have a private deck off of the master bedroom with french doors to spend some alone time on!

Many Blessings,

Those would be nice changes but your home is gorgeous just the way it is now!
I'm always dreaming of new ideas for our home but we'll have to do them slowly. We plan on being here for a long time so we don't have to rush and can do projects as the budget allows! Right now I really want more landscaping, that is tops on my wish list.

I would just like to get this one decorated first!!! I take it slow, but I end up pretty happy. Just takes me a while. We would love to enclose our screened in porch and make it our eating area and then add a larger screened in porch. Of course all that will be with my pool I dream about!!! Your home is so warm and cozy!

In such cases, cats know far better how to cope with a rainy day... But your nest is very attractive and warm; you can stick it out there easily. Each one of us has some wishes or would have done things a little different... that keeps us going and young!

I would definitely like granite counter tops again, I had them in the house we built (and sold) before this one and I miss them. I would also love wood floors but only in the kithchen and hallway. I kinda like my carpet in the living room and bedroom (I don't mean I like the carpet, I'd actually like to upgrade that too, I mean I like the feel of carpet in those rooms so I wouldn't change to wood) ;) I love seeing pics of your rooms Melissa, always inspires me to get mine in order!

Your home is beautiful, but I know what you mean about finally being able to put down roots and making your home truly yours.
I've moved around alot the past few years because of hubby's job, so I think I can totally relate! :)

Mr. Chestnut is sooooo cute:) Been raining up here too. Oh believe me. I love our home, but both my hubby and I are always making wish lists for things to do around the house. Being military is a challenge that way. I know. We always know though that if he ends up taking a job at another base, we can at least know that any changes we add will come back to us in the end towards asking price. One of the main wishes of ours will actually (cross your fingers), come true within the next year or so and that is to have our deck enclosed! What a wonderful dream. A place to eat and gather. More square footage too. I can't wait.

Everyday I look around and want to change so much about my house. There are more things that I dislike about this house than I like.

Our stairs drive me crazy because the way the first owners put carpet on them instead of hardwood. Put on the outside of the steps is hardwood...it is strange you would just have to see a picture.

The Master Bedroom needs to have Hardwood. My Kitchen needs granite.

The Master Bedroom bath has a long Mirror that I want to change to something like two smaller mirrors or cabinets.

Our My list is long but I am not sure how much longer I am going to be in this house. It is currently up for the Gods that BE...HOOAH is my life as yours is Semper Fi!

So here is to our Semper Fi and Hooah LIVES and where ever we may end up next!

Have a great day!

Hi, Melissa:

I probably say "what if" or "I wonder how ...." at least several times a week.

Like you, I love the way our home is decorated but over time we have added/changed things like Granite Countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms, tile backsplashes in the kitchen and tile floring in most of the rooms. Eventually, we would like to replace the remaining carpeting with more tile and some beautiful rugs to have a soft place to put our feet when we get up in the morning. :o)

I love your website and hope you will continue to inspire us with the beautiful way in which you decorate your home.

Blessings,
Cheri

Melissa, your home is beautiful! I like all the warmth it portrays to us! You have done a great job of making it so beautiful! I dream of having hardwood floors in the bedrooms. I'd like ceramic tile in the living room, dining room and kitchen. Aaah, someday. :)
Have a wonderful day.

Hi Melissa! I'm still here!! I've been reading all of your posts in what little time I get on the computer. Chase and his friends are taking this room over! I'm enjoying summer, but will be glad when we get back into a routine. I'm staying distracted alot. lol...

Boy I know about upgrades! We ended up going about $10,000 over what we were planing on spending. We put this extra room in and that was alot of it...and I don't even have granite or real wood floors! I love your floors by the way, they are so rich and shiny. Ours are the pergo, they have lasted very well. I was going to do real wood, but we ended up going over budget on other things. Another main thing we added were the built in bookcases and cabinets in the living room. The model home had them and they were a must! Of course a whirlpool tub was extra too...Anyway, I'm glad we were able to do the things we did too...there is always something we would like to change though. Your home is just beautiful as is.
I looked at granite the other day, it's going to cost about $1500 which isn't to bad...I am planning on saving up for them. And the reason I can't get my granite now...
Would you believe we are going to look at a sail boat today! Kevin has been wanting one for years. That's all I hear every summer, how much he wants to be out on the lake. We cannot aford alot, so we are looking at used older models. It will be fun to do something as a family. The one we are looking at today might be a piece of crap...lol. We will just have to see.

Take care and stay cool! Kristen

Melissa, your home is gorgeous the way it is. But I understand wanting to change things!

We had an architect draw up plans for a major addition two years ago so I would love to go ahead with that. But housing prices have fallen so much in our neighborhood that it would just be money down the drain at this point!

Melissa, Breaking ground today! Last night I decided to make the entire downstairs of the temporary home pink and green! I even decided to put a little cheap chandalier above the dinig room table! The garage floor will be cement so I am going to paint it white and put big fluffy rugs down. White cabinets that will stay in the garage when we build the rest and I will have a large island on wheels made for the kitchen area for more counterspace. I am so excited I can not stand it~!

Your home is just beautiful! I love the warmth & comfiness it portrays. I'm a carpet person so I love all your pretty carpet! Linoleum is also warmer than ceramic, but ceramic, I suppose, is "richer" looking. But dangerous when wet! We have marble floors (& carpet, wood, ceramic) - the real deal - blah!! People want to charge us more to jackhammer it up than to lay hardwood. For now it will have to stay. :) Love Mr. Chestnut too & so glad you include him in your photos! :)

My 5 year old has decided she wants a "pink & red" bedroom & at first I thought...eww. But, life is short, so why not? If that makes her happy. :) Hopefully I can make it pretty! :)
