One Year of Weighting

Hello Everyone!
Today is the day for me to celebrate!
It's been one year since I started my healthy journey.
Click here to read my first weight loss post.
Then click here to read how I lost the weight.
If you have read my previous posts then you know I was
diagnosed with very high B/P at a doctor visit the day
before and vowed to change my terrible eating habits.
It was scary and eye opening. I left on two medications
and a promise to myself to get my health and size back.
I remember we went out to eat Mexican food after the
depressing appointment and that was it. No more!
I'm proud to say I have not eaten it since.
Join me to read my success story.
Here I am today at 48 pounds down!
My B/P is 104/68 with no meds.
Celebrate is right!
Yes, this is me before my weight loss.
It was May of 08' and I was a size 14.
Huh? When did that happen? I'm only 5'3".
I was a small size 4 when we married in 99'.
See my wedding photo on my sidebar.
A 58 pound weight gain is not a good thing.
I took this yesterday and I am now a size 6 petite!
These are my new blue denim Liz Claiborne capris.
The pink ruffled top and turquoise necklace are from Cato.
I actually enjoy shopping for clothes again.
I'm so embarrassed to show you the before photos. Yikes!
I thought it was important to show you the differences though.
This is me taking our Christmas card photos in 08'.
Wow! Do you see my triple chin and large size?
I was holding steady at a size 14 but I was miserable.
I snored and could barely move. Really.
I am petite framed. This was a ton of extra weight for me.
After these photos I never went near a camera for another year.
Seriously. That is pathetic isn't it?
Fast forward to our Christmas card photos of 09'.
I was on my healthy diet and was down 30 pds at this point.
Much better but still a ways to go. I was a size 10 here.
I was still taking the B/P meds as well but it was now very low.
I would not go to the doctor for a few more months yet.
It was no surprise that she took me off the meds. Yay!
By May of 10' I was down 47 pounds and down to a size 8.
I showed you me in my old 14's in a previous post here.
If you are thinking of starting a weight loss program I
highly recommend documenting your before and afters.
Take photos and measurements and keep track of them.
This is something I did not do enough of and I'm regretting it.
I still weigh every-single-day and keep a journal.
I like to stay motivated and this works for me.
To read about the plateau I hit in May click here.
By June of 10' I treated myself to a stylish new haircut.
I was down 48 pounds at this point and still a size 8.
I was feeling great that day! Click here to read it.
I had a one year photo session yesterday to celebrate.
Size 6 petite works for me!
Afterwards I went shopping...:)
I invite all of you to try taking photos like this. It's fun!
Pull out your cameras, get dressed and start snapping.
You may surprise yourself. If it turns into the beginning of
your weight loss story then you have your before shots already.
I am grateful and thankful to all of you that gave me the credit
for motivating you this past year. I am truly honored by that.
You know who you are...:) I am proud of every single one of you!
As of today I'm still sitting at 48 pounds down but after
dropping another size the past few months I'm satisfied.
My ultimate goal will be 10 more pounds and 1 more size.
No time restrictions when it happens it happens.
I'm trying very hard not to stress over every single pound
and flab and so on. We are our own worst critics and that is bad.
We should all accept who we are and be happy with ourselves.
In my case I was not healthy before and had to change. It worked.
Now I have to get used to all of the new body changes.
Buying new clothes, blogging and my new found love of running
has helped. Yes, you read that correctly. I am running now!
What, me? I was never a runner but I have started...slowly.
It feels wonderful to be active and I will have to do this the
rest of my life to mantain this weight. If I could tell you
the main things I have learned this past year it is that
1. This is for life. Healthy eating is not a phase or a diet.
2. Exercise is very hard work. You must do it to lose it.
When you think you are done you must keep on moving.
My hubby taught me that. Feeling the *burn* is good.
I'm happy and healthier today than I have been in years.
It came just in time. We have a party next weekend and then
the Marine Corps Ball in November and then Christmas and so on.
Thank you for all of your support this past year!
I hope I helped in some small way if need be.
Email me anytime if you have any specific questions.
Not that I'm an expert but I will try to help you.
I did not mean to turn my decorating blog into a health blog
but I felt this was very important and I should share my story.
Thank you for reading it.
Have a wonderful week!

Melissa, you have definately inspired me to start and get healthy. What you have said about being big and unhealthy is true. The snoring and aching all over are taking their toll on me. I am now on a cholesterol medication and will be forever if I don't start working out and eating better. Thank you so much for being honest and showing your progress. Take care and enjoy your new freedom. For me, I need to now shed the fat suit that I'm stuck in. That's how I feel everyday. That I'm somewhere stuck inside a fat suit.

I am a fairly new follower of yours and looks like I started following you just in time! What a wonderful story! I so need to loose weight. I have always been very small until the last few years and am up to a 10 though still some 8's. It is very heavy for my frame and my joints ache! My mother has diabetes so this is very serious to get the weight off soon before it becomes more. I feel so stuck in a "no loose" rut! It's very frustrating! I could use all the tips I can get! You look fabulous! Congratulations!

I am also doing a Physician's Plan program, but I needed it to get off my tail. What a wonderful year for you and now you will have many many more! You go girl!!!!

Congratulations, Melissa! Your journey is a fabulous inspiration. You look fantastic! I know I'm overweight, and just figured "that's how grandmas are supposed to look", but I've had enough and I'm tired of being fat. Now that the weather is going to get cooler in Florida, I'm going to start walking as my exercise. I need to lose 50 lbs. and will think of you every time I start to backslide. Thank you!

You look fan-tab-u-lous darling! I too was a petite size 6 when we married 7 years ago and have never had a weight problem until I hit my 50's....now I'm an unflattering 14 and hate to clothes shop. I don't seem to get motivated although looking in a miror should be motivation enough. I know what to do, write down everything that I eat plus exercise, that's what did it for me before. Hopefully I'll be able to post a success story like yours one day.

Great job!

Melissa, you are so dang gorgeous! Congrats on a job well done. I am at your before stage, but I have never been a size 4 or 6 for that matter. The smallest I ever was was an 8 and that was with meds to lose weight. After seeing a photo last week on our trip I realized this has got to go. Right now a 12 would make me feel better, but I hope to get to a 10. At this age it is harder than ever. Blogging has actually made me lazy in the exercise dept., but no more excuses. I got back to moving this week and eating right. You are an inspiration, my friend.

Melissa!!! you look GORGEOUS and congratulations on your achievement. I know losing weight and trying to get in to a healthy lifestyle is no easy task. It takes hard work and determination - you have shown both of those and motivated so many in your journey, me included. I gained the 10lb back that I lost over the summer! I have to start again getting out and walking (once this heat leaves us) and eating a little better. My problem is I tend to deny myself so many things I like (instead of having them in smaller portions) then I feel deprived and start eating all the wrong things again. I have to stop!
I loved reading this post, and I thank you for sharing your before photos. You should be proud of what you've accomplished and showing the before pics only emphasizes all that you have conquered :-) Well done, my sweet friend, I am so proud of you.

WhooHoo Melissa!! I am sooo very happy for you! You are a true inspiration and look WONDERFUL!! I must say the weight loss journey is a very hard and daunting one. I start and then always stop because it never comes off fast enough and then I always get depressed because even if I loose said amount and become the size I was on our wedding day I will still be considered obese by the freaking BMI calculations. I look at old pics and think wow I look so pretty but then think hey I was still fat then too. It is a vicious cycle that is very hard to get off of. Anyways, congrats and I sooo love you sharing your story!!

I am on a weight loss spree myself. So far I have lost 17 lbs. I have another 15 to go, if possible. It is one day at a time. I never thought losing the first 17 could be so easy. It was just a lot of house and garden work and making friends with hunger (not real hunger, just not always being full). My next celebration will be when I break 140 lbs. and that is only 3 lbs away.

Whooh Who! You look fabulous! REMEMBER YOU were MY INSPIRATION back in August when I started my journey. IT IS NOT A DIET! JUST LIKE YOU SAID! It is a change! A new way of living! A life style change! I lost 33 lbs. and am keeping them off! It has been 7 months since the 33 lbs. have come off! I WILL NOT GO BACK! However, I do not run. But I walk a lot! I love the healthy living posts! Don't stop those! Congrats! Nancy from OHIO

Congratulations Melissa!! I know what a journey it is...about 4 years ago I adopted what I like to call, my new way of life plan. I did it due to family health concerns. Yes, the exercising can be so hard but if I don't do I feel terrible for the rest of the day.
Also, my hubby is in the Army but we always try and attend the Marine Ball wherever we are stationed, they are so, so much fun! I just know you will have a blast this upcoming ball.
You look fantastic!
Fondly,

If only I could lose my "triple chin" and look half as good as you in a year it will be worth it. Thank you for sharing I feel it was just for me!

WOW, congrats on that weight loss! I know your thoughts and struggles....
I am down 51 lbs as of this week, myself, all thanks to Weight Watchers; learning to cook healthier foods, exercising portion control, drinking enough water and getting some cardio workouts in.
It's quite a journey of ups and downs but the results are well worth it. Health, confidence and a happier outlook on life! (and treating yourself to a cute outfit you would have NEVER worn before!!)

I am so proud of you! Yes, I can relate to the "before" picture. Have you seen my weight loss photos in my navigation bar?

I slipped off the wagon last year and have put some on -- went up a size (scream), but as of this week I got back on track.

Thanks for the inspiration. You look wonderful. And yes, buying clothes when you are smaller is much more fun and easier!

Beth
