You Are What You Eat

Hello Everyone!
I'm back from my break early. I've been gone too long and
I missed you all. How was your Christmas? Ours was fantastic!
Thank you for all of your kind words on my last post. I decided
to keep on blogging. I'll just post a little bit less often. I cannot join
every single link party anymore though. There are so many of them.
While I do enjoy them I simply cannot redo a room or buy something
new for the sake of joining in. I found myself wanting to do just that.
I may join a few here and there. For the most part it will be just *me*.
You're all welcome and I hope you continue to read my blog into 2011.
~*~
It has been since September since I posted my one year weight loss
update and I thought I would get started early on my New Year's diet.
Yes, I said *diet*....
I have been eating unhealthy foods and not exercising with any real
consistency since mid November. Ugh. As a result in the last 6 weeks I
have packed on 6 pounds of unwanted fat. I wish I could tell you losing
weight and keeping it off is easy. I lost 48 pounds and went from a size
14 to a 6 petite in less than one year. To read my loss story click here.
Changing your lifestyle and sticking with it is hard work. I know...:)
I will always have to work extra hard to stay in shape and be healthy.
Who's with me? Are you ready to make 2011 your healthiest year yet?
Join me and I'll show what I ate to gain and what I plan to do to lose it.The Miller Family, Christmas 2010.
I can actually see the weight gain in my face.
The biggest difference is feeling sluggish. Not good.

We ate burgers, fries and Chick-fil-A too many times.
These foods are filled with too much fat, calories and sodium.
I indulged way too often in my old favorite drink Diet Dr Pepper.
I know what was I thinking? I went over a year without drinking sodas.
That will not happen again. I could see the puffiness from the sodium.

Yes, we ate this. Enough said.
We also made some of these...
I cannot stress enough how much dropping refined sugars from my diet
made such a positive difference. It is not worth eating it in the long run.
Here's a list of what I ate that was unhealthy during the last six weeks.
Restaurant foods:
Olive Garden, Outback, Chili's, Melting Pot, Ruby Tuesday and Mexican.
Also my favorite sushi (Due to the extra sodium that I get with the soy)
Love them all but I cannot indulge and lose. I think I would have to
run a marathon every week to compensate and that is not happening.
At home:
Heath Bar Coffee ice cream, cupcakes, pumpkin pie, whipped cream
breakfast orange rolls, mashed potatoes, prime rib, pasta dishes.
~*~
We said we were celebrating. The Holidays, my hubs birthday
in November and various other occasions kept coming up.
Do unhealthy foods really have to join the party?
I got what I deserved. I knew what I was doing and I'm over it.
I'm moving back to my healthy lifestyle all over again.
I'm excited about it!
It feels *great* to exercise and eat well!
I don't follow any particular structured diet plan.
I watch my portion sizes carefully. I always eat dinner and
I do not eat after a certain cut off time at night. This is key.

We will be eating a variety of fresh fruits and veggies.
When you don't eat extra sodium and sugars food tastes *real*.
Try it. You will know what I mean in a few short days.

I will always be drinking plenty of cold H2O. Yum!
In the long run no major harm was done. My B/P is still fine.
To continue eating that way was not a good idea though.
Exercise will be starting again now. I'm back to walking, running and
our Bowflex weight machine. Do you have any work out ideas for me?
I hope I helped to inspire some of you with my honesty.
It wasn't easy to admit I had fallen back into my old bad habits.
I'll let you know how it goes with my healthy changes once again.

Did you mean to add a post under this title? :)
There is a show on BBC America called this and I loved watching it, http://www.gillianmckeith.info/gillianmckeithtv/youarewhatyoueat.php

I'm ready to start getting back to walking and eating right next week... how bout you? Have you been good over Christmas ;)

Stacey said...

Well in the last two weeks it has been pies, pies, candy, pies, a little ham, and more pies! I'm in trouble. I've been watching the scale very carefully though. As we speak I'm having tomato soup and broccoli salad. Not bad. :)

Melanie said...

I am right there with you. For the 6 months, I have had all of those things that you listed. Chick Fil A to much and way to many sweet teas. I really need to lay off the sugar. I know that I will tell a difference but it is just getting to that point.

Here is to a New Year and healthy eating and exercising!

Oh Melissa, what a wonderful post! Between fertility drugs, just not caring when the drugs didn't work, the wonderful, but unhealthy cooking of my cajun husband & no excercise (aside from floating in the pool - HA!), I weigh more than I ever have. I'm vowing to do something about this year though.

Stacey said...

I'm back now that your post is visible. :)

Feeling sluggish is always one of the first signs for me that I'm over indulging. I think knowing the "right" way to feel is one of the most important ideas in maintaining a healthy weight. You go girl!

Well I just finished eating an handful of almonds Melissa, so you know what that means!!

But seriously, I recently found out that there is a connection to chronic inflammation in the body and serious health problems.

Here's a link to some info you might be interested in reading about...

It's so darn hard to eat healthy!!! It seems as though you can find SOMETHING wrong with just about every thing there is to eat out there:(

Best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year!

Ok I am so ready for the challenge. I need to take weight off and my husband since retiring from the Navy over the past 11 years has put on weight sitting at a desk with a high stress job. He is now on medication for his heart. I need to get him moving in the right direction but I have to say he pulls me down when he brings home sweets or sits there in the evening and says "I just want something sweet". Any suggestions????

We are all human Melissa. Getting back on track is the most important thing to do and you are doing just that! I'll be doing the same things as you are and will keep checking in on your progress. You are an inspiration to so many. Wishing you all good things for the New Year.

Shamefully, I have more than 6 pounds to lose. I have been eating terribly and plan to do something about it in 2011....stay tuned.

Goal: lose 30-35 pounds!

Gypsy Heart said...

I've eaten anything I wanted and drank the same ~ no moderation or portion control at all. :-) I so understand the feelings too ~ puffy, skin not as clear, etc. I'm not going to punish myself though and I hope you don't either. We're all allowed a bit of whatever during the holidays. I always drink tons of water so that does help. Hopefully, I can get back to my walking, etc. soon. Haven't been able to do much with these knees.

I had a wonderful holiday season! Here's to a healthy, prosperous and Happy New Year!

All of the above, guilty as charged. I plan on starting January 2nd with a very strict, healthy regeime until June 24th, my 51st birthday and a couple of weeks before going home. I will do this, I will look forward to it and celebrate with you. I have twice as much to lose but one pound at a time! Happy New Year!

Hi Melissa,

Years ago, I found out I was allergic to sugars. What?!!! I was in an uproar. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. Sugar will ruin you. I am still thin and in good shape at my age...in my early 60's! Yikes, did I say that? :-)

Melissa, you are so dear. You impress me so much. I love your honesty and your steadfastness.

God bless you,
Barb ♥

well ignore my earlier comment Melissa, I'm glad I checked back in, for some reason earlier all I saw was your blog title and no post under it?
Anyway, I am SO glad you will keep on blogging, you really are motivating in all ways ;) you help me think about my health and weight (which I am about to jump back on the wagon too, I have gained a ridiculous amount of weight since last summer!) and you inspire me with your home decor. I totally understand not joining in with all 'parties' but I do love to see home decor, so hopefully you'll still indulge us once in a while ;)
I admire you for your honesty in admitting your weight gain, I hope you keep us posted with your healthy eating habits during the coming weeks.... I'll need it ;)

lose the extra weight. You did so
well in the past. You will do it again. Don't worry :)

Hey girl - I know what you mean on so many levels. What you described about buying new things to decorate or change a room for a post was one of the reasons I took a break away from blogging. I am back to blogging, but I don't feel pressured to join in the linky parties or follow a schedule. Like you said, its just "me" and on my own schedule. I am enjoying blogging much more now.
Now as to dieting, I had lost 40 lbs and needed to lose another 20-25. Then, the holidays struck! LOL I, too, have gained back 6 lbs. I started back cutting out the bad stuff (diet soda, sweets, etc...sushi is my weakness) on Monday. I hate the withdrawal headaches. But I wish you lots of luck and hope you can get back on track very soon. Hugs, Barb

I, for one, am so happy you're not going to run yourself ragged trying to keep up with linky's. I actually felt like a 'not good' blogger for not doing it :) but always enjoyed looking through some of those participating and then felt guilt that I didn't try and do something just to be a 'good' blogger. Then I noticed my numbers were increasing for those stopping by to read what I wrote, so I felt better that I simply wrote for me and those close to me. It works :) I love coming to 'your home spot' and just reading what's going on, Melissa. Keep this as journal for your life and not to try and keep up with the Joneses haha and yes, here's to a healthier eating style in 2011!!!

Hi Melissa, It is easy to over eat during the holidays. I know I have been! I crave sugar all the time and I know how bad it is for me!

Kevin and I had to have a physical for our insurance. If we are in good health then we get discounts on our monthly insurance. Well, I checked out ok, but Kevin has high cholesterol and his weight is over the limit for his height. He knew he would be...Anyway, his cholesterol LDL is 168 which is considered high so he is really worried and is now back on his healthy eating. He has been playing the kinect at night, it's really good exersize. My cholesterol LDL was 71 which is good, but I still need to exersize. I'll tell you, I have had NO energy to do anything lately. I know what I need to do, but just sit down and watch T.V. Maybe I'll perk up soon. I usually get this way after Christmas...Good luck on your healthy eating, we ate at Olive Garden last night...so bad! Talk to you soon, Kristen

Kristens Creations said...

P.S. I'm so glad you are keeping your blog! I know what you mean about buying something to join in on a blog party. I have found myself doing that too, but cannot afford to do it very much. I very rarely join parties, although I would love to! My Christmas decor will probably look pretty much the same from year to year. I do add a little here and there...

I will be doing a few new things in the kitchen and Chase's room soon, but nothing major.

Oh, and Kevin just had salad last night!

I had lost 10 lbs. and I think I found them all again through the holidays, but for me, I like to enjoy and know that I can get it back in control. I am walking/jogging another 5K at the end of February so I have to get back in training mode! I got Wii Fit so I am hoping it motivates me to move my tail! I also have to kick up my water drinking. I love the holidays, but I do get to the point of "I want to go home and just eat what I know I need to!" So glad to see you back! Happy New Year!

Hi Melissa,

Nice picture of you and hubby, don't beat yourself up too much you've done a wonderful job of losing. You know what to do and you'll get back on track I'm sure.

I always remember what my Grandmother said...'moderation' is what she said, everything in moderation.

Diets don't work long term, yes I so agree with changing to a healthly life style but once a week, I think you should reward yourself. I told you awhile back I had an addiction to Coke, (the drink) well I am happy to say I kicked it 3 mos ago...but once a week when I was trying to kick it I would have one and now I don't crave it at all.

Happy New Year, so glad you are keeping your blog, I don't comment too often but do read you :)

All the best,

Hi Melissa~~ I have kept it off now for over a year. I creep up a couple lbs. but then I watch what I eat and it comes off. You will do the same. I Have to agree with the woman who has a message right before me... You have to let yourself have one day a week where you treat yourself... I do every week. It is usually Friday for me. Sometimes... Well Melissa all I can say is.....your human woman! :) Cut yourself some slack. You're back on track and that is the hardest part getting started again cause that is where I am at right now. I will be seeing a nutritionist for the first time next week and I can't wait. The trick for me is getting me motivated and then keeping me going. With my IC finding balance with diet is verrrry tricky. Hence, the professional lol. I'm with ya and will be glad to check in periodically to compare notes. Good luck with the lifestyle boost and will be posting about my talk with the nutrionist after my meeting. Cross your fingers. Take care.

Such a great post Melissa, in so many ways. First, I agree about blogging. I've found myself at a crossroads myself these past few months - wanting to post, but feeling more obligated to than wanting to. I decided to wait until I was truly ready and inspired. I think my posts are going to be much fewer and farther between too. Next, I'm a gym rat who at 9 months pregnant is feeling so uncomfortable in my skin. I lost 65 pounds after my second daughter almost 10 years ago and kept it off until this pregnancy. I can't wait to get back to the gym and back to my healthy lifestyle. The only thing that worries me now is my age - 41. I know it will be harder. I'll keep you posted.
