Clearing Out The *Stuff*

Hello Everyone!
It's nice to be back blogging. Thank you for all of your kind words on my
husband and his recent deployement. He is very happy to be back home again.
We still have no definite moving date as of yet. Today is his first day back at
work so it's possible we should have orders to Maryland by next month. I hope...
We have our current home to sell and another one to buy so we need to get a move on.
In the meantime I have done some major de-cluttering. I plan to have a much
simpler, lighter and brighter style next time around. I have many ideas and am
ready to decorate a new home again. It will be fun and exciting to start fresh.
Join me and I will show you my donating process.
First I gathered everything I no longer wanted into one room.
I used the breakfast nook in the kitchen as my landing zone. It's funny
how we don't even realize we buy the same colors over and over again.
Everything here looks red, green gold or orange. I think it's time for an update.
All of the candlesticks had to go. I really never used them as much as I thought.
I'm thinking some type of special occasion candles for the next home.
A few more items from the formal dining room were added as well.
I'm not sure why I was hanging on to all of this stuff. I'm definitely not a clutter bug.
To view my post on home interior clutter and cleaning click here.
Next boxes were gathered and filled. We ended up with about ten in total.
Many items were large and did not even fit in boxes. My entire SUV
was full from front to back and everything was brought to Goodwill.
This does not include everything. I still have much more to go but since
we will be putting the house on the market I don't want it empty. Even after
all of the clearing and cleaning it all still looks quite full from room to room.
We donated a couple of hundred DVD's and kept only our top favorites.
Do you clear out and donate regularly as well?

My sister and her family moved into their gorgeous new home last month
and as soon as I get some done photos I'll post them for you to see.  I think you will
enjoy seeing her modern yet rustic decorating style. She has inspired me for sure.
Their home has many unique features and a minimalist design that is stunning.

Stay tuned for my latest blog design coming this weekend.
Once again I was ready for a new look. I hope you like it.
Have a wonderful week!

Wow, Melissa, that is a ton of stuff, but doesn't it feel good to purge things that you no longer use. It makes you feel so fresh and airy. Now someone else will enjoy it all. I am sure your home will sell soon, it is stunning and I hope you find just the right one for your move. Hugs, Marty

I'm in the middle of doing this myself, Melissa! I'm just going to try a yard sale first and then drive everything left to Goodwill the following day. Plus, I have some furniture I'm going to be selling, so I need to take pictures and get them on Craig's List. We did do a clear out two years ago when we put the house on the market then, so I don't know where all this stuff came from! : )

I understand where you are at..we are doing it too. Selling, downsizing and looking for a tiny house for us! Good luck with everything! :D

Melissa, you will feel so LIGHT and FREE after donating so much of this. It's great fun to start over, especially when you can keep the things that are nearest and dearest to you (in addition to your hubby of course!).

donating is an ongoing thing here. Right now I have to comb through our bookshelves again -- time for another cleanout!

Your home is so lovely, I agree with Marty that it will sell soon. And you will find something you adore, and you will decorate it beautifully!

Wow! When you clean you things out, you really clean them out. Many people in your area are going to be thrilled when they hit Goodwill in the next few weeks. Good luck on your home sale.

Oh my gosh, I wish I loved close, I'd have taken all those goodies off your hands for sure ;-) I can never find anything good at my Goodwill now. Usually the good stuff is behind glass cases and you have to bid on them at auction day o Saturdays!
Hope your house sells quickly, I can't wait to see your new home:-)

What a load of stuff!
We have been 1/2 selling and 1/2 donating stuff lately!!!

It feels great to get rid of things, doesn't it? It always feels like a lighter load to me. Hope you are feeling good about the move. :)

Hi Melissa,
Can I go shopping at your house? ;) I see so many lovely things. I understand the need for change, but I hope you don't change things too much, because I *LOVE* your style. =)

Hopefully, your husband will get the orders to MD soon, so you two can begin making plans. Thanks for the update! XO ~Liz

Hi Melissa, it's great to see you back again! It looks like you have been very busy. I am getting ready to do some more de-cluttering myself. I donate pretty regularly but I still find myself holding on to things that I don't use or need any more! Sometimes it is hard to get rid of things when I think I may use it again. =0)
When we were still in the military our frequent moves helped me to keep things to a minimum!
I look forward to seeing your sister's new home and hearing more about your move to MD!
Welcome back!

I love to purge things I no longer use...and always donate to Goodwill. Have fun and I am anxious to see your new home...when you find it!!

Wow! That's a lot of candle sticks! lol But you have some beautiful decor. It's not fun to move, but getting rid of the clutter will help!

Hi Melissa - its been a long while. Good to hear from you again. I don't envy you the moving/packing process. Maryland sounds fun. Great access to so many places. You know if you need my professional advice, either real estate or home staging, all you have to do is call me. Sometimes a second eye sees things differently than you do. Just remember that the way you "live" in your home is exactly opposite of the way you "sell" your home. Looks like you're starting out great. So nice of you to donate your lovelies. There are going to be some very happy people. :) Good luck!

Hello Melissa! I'm glad to hear from you again. I agree, one of the things you have to thank for is the opportunity to start something new. I see familiar movies in your DVD collections btw. I will look forward in reading more of your posts. Have a great day ahead!

Actually this evening we went through the kids clothes and have two bags of clothes to donate to an area church. Usually if I feel stressed I clean...I guess putting things in order make me feel less stressed?
Looking forward to seeing your sister's home! Take care!!

Hi Melissa! Oh, it's good to see you posting and you're really purging, aren't you? Now it's too bad I don't live close to you! I saw some plates and Roosters that I would gladly take off your tiny hands! It really does make you feel accomplished to get rid of things you don't use! I wish you the best with the sell of your home and with the purchase of your next one!
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

HI Melissa, I have a garage full of boxes that Abilities Unlimited is picking up on Wed...and they will be coming back soon to get more stuff. I am cleaning out every cabinet and closet. That certain something I told you about is coming in Oct. so I am motivated now! lol...It does feel good to get rid of stuff doesn't it? My problem is that I always think I might use it someday...Well, if I haven't used it in the last year or so it's going!

Thanks for your nice compliments on my new items. I don't blame you for wanting to wait to buy stuff. Are you thinking about changing your style and colors? Isn't your sister doing the Pottery Barn look? It seems all styles are in right now. I am seeing everything at market. Alot of the blogs are doing a more simple look. You know, one thing I am seeing is alot of the blues mixed in with the reds and golds. I am eventually going to be doing that. I am loving that color combo! Glad you are back! Good luck on your purge! Kristen

So good to see you back and boy, have you been busy!!! I wish I lived near you. I would have bought your candlesticks!!! We moved into a smaller house when we moved here to Charleston and we did a massive purge. We had a 1500 sq. ft. unfinished basement in Michigan that we just stored stuff in. We don't have a basement here and that was a ton of stuff with no where to go. We did a massive purge and as much as I tend to "hoard" things, it felt so good to get rid of so much. I need to do it again! Praying that your home sells soon.

Glad to see you back! And, wow, you've been busy! I know how good it must feel to "purge!" I'm sure your home will sell quickly, and you'll be settled in your new home before you know it, sharing your fabulous projects with all of us. xoxo

Melissa,
So glad your hubby is home and I know that anticipation of an upcoming major move. Looks as if your focus is in the right direction. This post is so meaningful...as we all keep entirely too much stuff. The past two years I've been weeding and finding my decor has changed a bit, as well! Career changes had definately made me aware of items I no longer use. Like you, I donate every Season as I go through boxes of decor! Good luck with your move and take us along in your laptop, dear!
Fondly,
Pat

That's a ton of stuff!!! I go through stuff regularly & donate to Goodwill as well. I did a garage sale with some friends last summer & decided that loading stuff in my SUV is a whole lot easier!!! I can't wait to see the pictures of your sisters house. Glad to have you back!

Melissa,
It's so great seeing you again!! I've missed you and your wonderful blog so much and can't wait for your fresh start!! I've been inspired lately to use it, donate it or throw it away, too, but I can't say I'm being as thorough as you! I can't wait to see your sisters' home as well as your new home and all the decorating adventures I'm sure we'll follow!
Take care, Susan

Glad you are back! :-)
When we moved from overseas recently, we purged A LOT of stuff before the move and more after our things arrived! Ha We plan on having a small garage sale this Fall. Our neighborhood only allows them the first weekends in May and October, and we missed the time in May.

Pam said...

I really need you to come do that in my house. I used to declutter about once a year, but lately I have been adding to the clutter rather than removing it. Can't wait to see your new blog design. I have been thinking about a change myself!

Nice to see you back! Wow, you have really been clearing out...feels good doesn't it? I've done so much with my last 2 moves and I still have seasonal boxes to go through. It's just been wayyyyy too hot though. I am anxious to get it done as I know others will be blessed.

I am still trying to purge and get rid of things from our move...It definitely has been a chore...If I lived closer to you I would steal those candlesticks and apothecary jars...LOL

I'm ready for a change of style as well...looking forward to watching all the great things I know you will do when you get your new home...

Hi Melissa, it's good to get an update from you. The process of cleaning out and decluttering isn't much fun, but it always feels good in the end. I hope all goes well with the sale of your home and finding a new one. Keep us posted!

It seems for us, that the best purging takes place after an overseas move- my husband realizes that all the things he treasured prior to its 2.5 years in storage aren't so special anymore! :) Someone is going to be blogging about all the great stuff they found at your Goodwill!

Marianne said...

Doesn't it feel great to clean out, it gives me such a clean and fresh feel! I'm always donating or Freecycling stuff. Don't get rid of too many things, you have such pretty stuff. And you can always paint what you have like the candle holders. I'm going through a white phase right now so I've just been painting away. Listen to me just babbling on and on. Have fun cleaning!

You had so many pretty items!
Can't wait to see your next house. I know we're in for a treat.
Happy house hunting!

I wish I lived near your Goodwill. ;)

I always felt like that was one good thing about moving with the military every few years...it was always a reason to declutter.

I usually have a yard sale once a year now to get rid of the excess. It gives me a couple hundred dollars for something special. This year was my pergola. :)

I haven't been here in a while - so nice to see you! Welcome home hubby! :) So you took all of this to Goodwill? Why didn't you call me first? It's sweet folks like you that make me love Goodwill. LOL :)

Hi Melissa!

Missed visiting your blog while you were away! I too, have been very busy. We moved to the country last summer and did not like it so now we are in the process of moving back to our old home which never sold. It flooded back in Feb. and we got to do a total remodel on the downstairs. Been busy getting it decorated and back in order. Now to put the other home on the market. I thought Summers were for fun and vacationing? Ha- Seems like I have missed that these last two summers. I hope you are well!!!

Our house is for sale too, so I've been de-cluttering/organizing/cleaning/donating for awhile now. Kinda feels good, doesn't it? Good luck with your sale. Our house has been listed for 2-1/2 months. It's hard to be patient, but I'm trying.

hugs,

Wow, girl, I know that Goodwill store was happy, happy, happy to see you walk in the door. What a lot of great stuff you donated! I hope you'll show us photos of your house when you have just the way you want to show it to potential buyers. It always looks wonderful, but I'm betting these pictures will be doubly good! :)
